Lea Salonga leads lineup of singers at concert-for-a-cause to honor Ryan Cayabyab and build UP medical facility

Several singers are performing on the evening of September 21, 2019 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) for what is set to be this year’s biggest tribute concert for composer Ryan Cayabyab. The National Artist for Music and Ramon Magsaysay awardee is being honored at “Ang SOAP Opera ng Buhay Ko 2: Musika ni Ryan, Medisina ng Ating Bayan (Isang Pagpupugay ng Iskolar ng Bayan sa Pambansang Alagad ng Sining).”

The musical extravaganza spearheaded by the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Foundation (UPMAF) brings together Lea Salonga, Jed Madela, Jaya, Rachel Alejandro, Pinky Marquez, Cris Villonco, Franco Laurel, Ima Castro, John Arcilla, Yasmien Kurdi, Armand Ferrer, Baihana, Ryan Cayabyab Singers, Cris Go, Tim Pavino, and others, for one night of an all-Ryan Cayabyab repertoire. Providing the musical accompaniment are the 50-piece ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra to be conducted by Maestro Jonathan Velasco; plus an 80-member chorus composed of The Mass Appeal, Ateneo Chamber Singers, UP Medical Alumni Society Choir, and UP Medicine Choir.

The concert title is taken from the acronym SOAP, which stands for Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan – a documentation method utilized by doctors to complete a patient’s chart. Ang SOAP Opera ng Buhay Ko 2: Musika ni Ryan, Medisina ng Ating Bayan” “features a total of about 150 musical talents in a two-hour show that aims to raise funds for the construction of the 11-storey UP Medical Sciences Building in UP Manila. The said structure is an academic center that will house classrooms, laboratories, clinical simulation rooms, training facilities and auditoriums.

Ryan is delighted and amazed that his music has become a channel for charitable endeavors. The composer declared, “Never imagined that a person’s music can help raise the needed funds for various charity or educational projects.” Ryan added a statement for the organizers of the tribute concerts and the music lovers who will be watching the shows. “Salamat sa realization na may ibang silbi ang musika sa ikabubuti ng komunidad.”

All of the artists involved in “Ang SOAP Opera ng Buhay Ko 2” have waived their talent fees. “They are doing this show for the love of National Artist and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Ryan Cayabyab, for the love of the Iskolar ng Bayan, for the UP Med School, and the much needed Medical Sciences Building,” said organizer, Dr. Melfred Hernandez.

“Ang SOAP Opera ng Buhay Ko 2: Musika ni Ryan, Medisina ng Ating Bayan,” is a joint project of the UP Medical Alumni Foundation (UPMAF) Inc., in cooperation with the UP College of Medicine Resource Generation Office, the UP Manila Chancellor’s Committee for Culture and the Arts, the UP Medical Alumni Society (UPMAS) and the UP College of Medicine Class 1994 Homecoming Silver Jubilarians.
