MARIQUINA - A Journey Towards Healing

One of the Cinemalaya 2014 entries that stands out for me in terms of its appealing story, photography, and nuanced acting is Milo Sogueco's MARIQUINA. Mylene Dizon as the lead could not be the first choice but she perfectly fit in the shoes of Imelda's character judging from the trailer. She has always been a reliable actress and her take on the role is far from the kontrabida role that she's been getting from the teleseryes.  The Story: Mariquina tells the bittersweet story of IMELDA GUEVARRA (Mylene Dizon), a successful businesswoman, who grew up with an emotionally distant father, ROMEO (Ricky Davao), a once recognized shoemaker who lost both his shoe factory and his beloved wife.  When Imelda is informed about her father’s death, she tentatively proceeds with the funeral preparations. Her search for the last perfect pair of shoes serves as the catalyst that opens up old wounds. It also unlocks memories of growing up in awe at how her father could transform a sheet

BE│LOVED - A Boutique Portrait Studio To Make You Feel Loved

I was very fortunate to be invited to the launching of a ‘boutique portrait’ studio recently. It has always been my dilemma before that I will get the special treatment I deserve when it comes to getting my portraits. I noticed that in some studios you are treated based on how you look and do not assist you in terms of getting the right poses so you will look at your best. I’m glad that BE│LOVED is born. Now, I can be assured that my interest will be taken cared of and their priority. BE│LOVED is an exciting new concept in the Philippine portrait studio industry. The brand, the first ‘Boutique Portrait’ Studio, promises to offer the country’s most creative, most unique and most intimate photographic experience. Each work is tailored to capture the personality of the subject.

Chikkaness Review: Trophy Wife - Character-Driven Sexy Drama That Is Fast-Paced And Exciting

The look, feel and story of the film are evocative. It contains interesting ideas and some gorgeous photography. This could also be appealing to the fashionistas – credit to the stylists of the actors though there are just some color combinations that get repeated but maybe that is to define more the characters that they play. The movie is for viewers who want plots and characters spelled out for them. You don’t want to wait until the end to witness twists as every now and then something new is being revealed. Some are pretty shocking and some you might not find realistic, but overall those make this movie worth watching. Cristine Reyes gives a thoughtfully pained performance. Heart Evangelista has exhibited effective portrayal in her role. It may not as big as that of Cristine but she was able to pull it off such that teamwork was evident between them. Derek Ramsay is deeply charismatic but has a real sadness to him. He gets some good support from John Estrada who has

Ikaw Lamang Honed Julia Montes As A Better Actress

Julia Montes is very thankful to ABS-CBN’s master teleserye “Ikaw Lamang” for honing her to become a better actress through the character she portrayed, Mona. “Before ‘Ikaw Lamang’ started, I was so nervous because I didn’t know if I can act side by side with the big stars who are part of the cast. But eventually, I became at ease because they were always generous and were ready to help me give justice to my role,” said Julia.

Cinemalaya 2014 Guide: Gino Santos' #Y

Direk Gino Santos “ #Y ” chronicles the adventures of the members of a generation made universal by the realms of social media, the Internet, sex, drugs, alcohol, and the occasional party and bullshit.  The trailer already provided a glimpse of excellence on its scoring and editing. It seems to be an emotionally gripping examination of the generation Y with Elmo Magalona's character as very edgy. It is on this rare opportunity where young actors from the different networks collaborate for a project geared towards tackling the issues of the youth today.  CAST: Elmo Magalona / Coleen Garcia / Slater Young / Kit Thompson / Sophie Albert / and Chynna Ortaleza.

Cinemalaya 2014 Guide: Roderick Cabrido's CHILDREN'S SHOW

Roderick Cabrido's “Children’s Show” is a film based on a real life story of children ages 10-15 years old being used by a syndicate for an underground wrestling match. The trailer boasts of its natural performances from its lead actors like Miggs Cuaderno and Buboy Villar. The drama is interesting and I'm looking forward how the story will be told. CAST: Allen Dizon / Gloria Sevilla / Buboy Villar / Miggs Cuaderno / Nathan Lopez / Divine Grace Aucina

Cinemalaya 2014 Guide: Carlos Siguion-Reyna's HARI NG TONDO

Ace director Carlos Siguion-Reyna is back via the Cinemalaya entry film, HARI NG TONDO (WHERE I AM KING). It follows the story of a grandfather on the brink of bankruptcy and brings his grandchildren back to the community that made and shaped him, only to find out the place is no longer the same. I found the trailer charming, touching, and funny. I'm sure though that there's more to this comeback film of Direk Carlos.  CAST: Robert Arevalo / Liza Lorena / Rez Cortez / Aiza Seguerra / Cris Villonco / Ciara Sotto / Rafa Siguion-Reyna / Lui Manansala / Gian Magdangal / Lorenz Martinez / Menggie Cobarrubias / Carlos Canlas / Mark Tayag / Raul Montesa / Jelson Bay / Hans Eckstein / Gino Ramirez  with the special participation of Eric Quizon / Ali Sotto / and Audie Gemora

Cinemalaya 2014 Guide: Francis Xavier Pasion's BWAYA

As Divina searches for the body of her daughter in the marshlands of Agusan del Sur, she learns a lesson more tragic than her fate -- not all predators are underwater. The film is based on actual events. Director Francis Xavier Pasion must be exploiting the capabilities of his main actor Urian Best Actress Angeli Bayani in this film and I think that needs be as there's really more that this actress can give. The camerawork seems to be working in favor of the film, emphasizing Angeli's nuances with the appealing photography. CAST: Angeli Bayani / Karl Medina / RS Francisco / Jolina Salvado

Cinemalaya 2014 Guide: Joel Lamangan's HUSTISYA

Joel Lamangan and Nora Aunor's tandem in a film is back via the Cinemalaya's Director's Showcase Category entry, HUSTISYA. It follows about a foul-mouthed woman (Nora Aunor) fights for her soul in the belly of the city. Working for a human trafficking agency controlled by a powerful syndicate, she sees no evil, hears no evil. In a society like ours, you have only two choices – to be a victim, or a victimizer. She makes her choice.   I can certainly expect a delightful performance from Ms Nora Aunor. Judging from the trailer, she's a sure winner already for the Best Actress trophy in the 10th year of Cinemalaya. The scoring is outstanding that draws me already to the intriguing and and thrilling trailer of the film that I'm predicting to be getting recognition from different award-giving bodies in the next awards season.  CAST: Nora Aunor / Rocco Nacino / Sunshine Dizon / Rosanna Roces / Gardo Versoza / Chynna Ortaleza / and Romnick Sarmenta

CAST: Nova Villa / Freddie Webb / Dante Rivero / Ruby Ruiz / Ken Chan / Denise Barbacena / Coleen Borgonia / RJ Agustin / Lara Morena

Cinemalaya 2014 Guide: Milo Sogueco's MARIQUINA

Milo Sogueco's MARIQUINA synopsis: Unlike the former Philippine First Lady, Imelda is indifferent towards shoes. To her, they are fraught with the bittersweet nostalgia of childhood, one that was marred by a difficult relationship with her shoe-maker father, Romeo. Growing up, all of hers were handmade by him. Now a mature woman, she takes a pivotal call from the morgue, spurring her search for the perfect pair of shoes for her dead father. The deeper she searches for the perfect shoes, the more she finds herself. Oh I love the visuals and cinematography of its trailer. The film spans some thirty years - from the 80s to date and I could feel the vibe of those periods already. Also, the fact that the screenplay is done by Jerrold Tarog, this must be a pleasure to watch with well-made actors showcasing it. CAST: Ricky Davao / Mylene Dizon / Bing Pimentel / Barbie Forteza / Dennis Padilla / Che Ramos / Mel Kimura
