Rachel Alejandro plays Aurora Quezon in the film, “Quezon’s Game”

After getting rave reviews for playing Paula in the hit musical movie “Ang Larawan,” Rachel Alejandro takes on another challenging role in “Quezon’s Game.”

The movie is a drama directed by Matthew Rosen and produced by ABS-CBN Film Productions’ Star Cinema and streaming service iWant; it stars an international cast headlined by Raymond Bagasting as Philippine President Manuel Quezon, and Rachel Alejandro as his wife, Aurora Quezon.

“Quezon’s Game” tells of the little-known story of how President Quezon helped Jews escape the Holocaust by convincing American authorities to issue Philippine visas to more than a thousand Jewish refugees. President’s Quezon’s compassion has been compared to Oskar Schindler, the German industrialist who inspired the Oscar Best Picture “Schindler’s List.”

As President Quezon’s better half, Aurora was known for her humanitarian involvement and unwavering support for her husband. Rachel portrayed Aurora with grace and conviction, earning for the singer-actress an Award of Excellence for Actress at Canada’s Cinema WorldFest Autumn Session 2018.

Since completion in late 2018, the film has been making the rounds of international filmfests where it has been getting praise from global critics and audiences. Aside from Rachel’s award “Quezon’s Game” also won 11 other accolades at Cinema WorldFest— including an Award for Excellence in Acting for Raymond Bagatsing and supporting actor Billy Ray Gallion, and an Award for Recognition in Directing for Matthew Rosen.

The latest in the string of successes of “Quezon’s Game” is bagging awards for Art Direction, First Feature and Direction, and Best Foreign Movie of the Year at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival last April 14.

Rachel considers the awards a bonus for the privilege of being part of an important film. She says, “I didn’t know that the Filipino people led by President Quezon did the ultimate act of kindness and compassion in 1938, until I got as former First Lady Aurora Quezon.”

Rachel also feels privileged to give life to a remarkable historical figure. “When I began digging more into the character of Doña Aurora Quezon, I was awed by what I discovered. She was so much more than just a great First Lady. To me, she represented the very best of us Filipinos.”

Watch Rachel Alejandro in “Quezon’s Game” when it opens in cinemas across the Philippines on May 29; the film will stream on iWant after the theatrical release.
