Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Solidifies Fanatics Across The Country

It's no secret that Filipinos are big fans of basketball apart from boxing and beauty pageants. We love to compete and at the same time, to have fun. We love to cheer as it's inherent from us to be talented and committed to the things we love. We have produced champions (Pacquiao, Wurtzbach ring a bell?) that have been identified as country's pride and heroes as well.

Basketball fanatics will now be rooting for new idols and someone that's closer to home as Sen. Manny Pacquiao’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League will begin on Thursday (January 25) at Smart Araneta Coliseum where the competing teams represent a province, city or municipality in the country and has a home-and-away format that will give teams a chance to play in front of their home fans. The opening ceremonies, followed by a match-up between the Paranaque Patriots and Caloocan Supremos, will air live on ABS-CBN S+A starting at 7pm.

Ten teams will compete in the inaugural Anta Rajah Cup, namely Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Caloocan, Imus, Muntinlupa, Navotas, ParaƱaque, Quezon City, and Valenzuela.

Representing Sen Pacquiao, Arnold Vegafria, ALV Events International chairman and overall head of production and marketing of MPBL says, "Through Senator Manny Pacquaio's vision, we have a basketball league that truly reaches the grassroots level. Finally, Filipinos from all walks of life who have the talent and passion for the game will be able to show their mettle on the hardcourt. We are thankful for this opportunity and hope advertisers and basketball fans support this. This is another platform where Pinoys can find their potential basketball heroes."

MPBL commissioner Kenneth Duremdes stresses that “This is the league for the Filipinos and a league for all.”

Teams will be competing in a single-round robin elimination round with each team hosting at least two home games in their respective courts.

Applications have been sent already coming from the Visayas and Mindanao regions and they're looking forward to bring the league to other parts of the country.

Make sure to attend the opening as it will be graced by celebrities and beauty queens who will act as the team's muses and a car and 10 motorbikes will be raffled off.

I wish the best for their first season and I'm on the lookout for my next basketball heartthrob to cheer on.
