Hear The Cries of the Youth on Green Day's American Idiot

A Journey into a Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Don’t wanna be an American idiot
Don’t want a nation under a new mania
                                    -- American Idiot, Green Day

These are troubling times. You switch the television on or log on to the internet and all you see are images of refugees rushing to Europe, police brutality, protests against racism in America, massive corruption all over the globe, rain forests burning in Indonesia, the polar ice caps melting, among other equally depressing news. Alongside these images are vapid reality shows and their equally vapid reality stars, music videos with scantily clad men and women, and TED Talks telling you how to live your life better. It’s enough to break anybody. It’s enough to make you want to get you off your couch and scream.

Remember what it was like to be young, bright eyed and full of hope? Conversely, have you ever reached that point when you looked into your computer or television and felt disheartened, lost and jaded?

This June, 9 Works Theatrical, in partnership with Globe Telecom, proudly brings you a one-of-a-kind, intense and powerfully relevant production about the disillusioned youth in their search for something real.

Do you know what's worth fighting for
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
And you feel yourself suffocating
Does the pain weigh out the pride?
                                    -- 21 Guns, Green Day

American Idiot is a rock opera written by Michael Mayer and Billie Joe Armstrong, of Green Day, featuring music and lyrics by Green Day. It’s the sound of youth that’s disenchanted with the world, bombarded by images from all forms of media, and their insurgence against the world they’ve come to know. It’s the story of suburban youths living unhappily in “Jingletown, USA,” who decide to buy bus tickets to the city to challenge the “do-nothing, go-nowhere quicksand of their lives.”

American Idiot follows the journey of three young men as they face the harsh realities of the world around them – a symbolic post-9/11 America – where they must face the challenges of love, teen pregnancy, war, drugs, and loss. The musical is set to the incredibly biting and riveting music of Green Day that features a surprisingly profound understanding of the pains and frustrations of today’s youth.

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone
-- Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Green Day
