Happening Now: Asia's Largest Queer Film Festival in Quezon City

 

Last December 9 marked the beginning of the 8-day pink film screening at Trinoma Mall, Cinema 3 of Quezon City's Pink Film Festival. This coincides with the Quezon City's 75th anniversary celebration as a city Forty five films about lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders from fifteen countries including the Philippines will be featured in the country’s biggest outing of queer films. 

The QC Pink Festival opens with the world premiere of prizewinning documentary filmmaker Nick Deocampo’s “#pinQCity,” about Quezon City’s LGBT community caught in its daily struggle to survive. Award-winning films line up the eight-day film program led by the controversial Cannes Film Festival grand prize winner, “La Vie d’Adele” (Blue is the Warmest Color), the German gay film, “Freier Fall” and the American documentary, “Before We Know It.” Among the participating countries are Sweden, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Vietnam. 




Local films include recently produced films like Joel Lamangan’s “Lihis,” Jose Altarejos’ “Unfriend,” Andrea Sigrid Bernardo’s “Ang Huling Cha Cha ni Anita,” and Alvin Yapan’s “Gaydar.”  Program also includes short films and documentaries.


A Pride March will serve as highlight of the week-long celebration. Seen to be the largest gathering of Filipino LGBT community and its supporters, it will be staged at the Quezon City Memorial Circle on Saturday, December 13.  LGBT organizations, local barangay units, and school-based LGBT organizations nationwide are expected to join the Pride March. It will feature a float competition, night party, rainbow booths, fashion show, and the QC LGBT Rainbow awards, the first of its kind in the country. Awards will be given to exemplary personalities of Quezon City who helped advance the LGBT movement.


The QC International Pink Film Festival and QC LGBT Pride March are projects of the Quezon City Pride Council (QCPC) chaired by Soxie Topacio and the Philippine Initiative on LGBT Pride Advocacy Inc. (PhiLPA) headed by Nick Deocampo, who also serves as the Pink Festival Director.
