Chikkaness Review: 1st CineFilipino Film Festival

Ang Huling Cha Cha ni Anita Movie  is my fetish coming-of-age movie. It was an absolute pleasure to follow Anita ( Teri Malvar ) and Pilar's ( Angel Aquino ) characters throughout the film. It succeeds in telling a compelling, moving story witho ut resorting to cheap sloppiness. It triumphs in featuring the life of a teenage girl who fell in love to a woman who's been judged by some prejudices from her neighborhood. Teri is phenomenal in this movie, the kind of performance that truly deserved her best actress trophy from the recently concluded CineFilipino awards night. It was also wonderfully acted by Angel Aquino. If someday my life will be featured in a film, I would love to have it told by  Sigrid Andrea P. Bernardo .  Mike Alcazaren 's PUTI is a pleasant surprise in the horror genre establishing an atmosphere that will surely chill and terrify you. Cinematography was shown with ing enuity and making great use of claustrophobic atmosphere. It also effective

Chikkaness Review: LIHIS - Love Knows No Boundaries

I must admit that one of the Sineng Pambansa entries that I'm very excited to watch is LIHIS alongside with Tinik and Lauriana. Finally, I was able to watch it during its gala premiere and indeed it's a product crafted by a master director. Joel Lamangan has just fashioned a masterpiece that I'm sure will be recognized here and abroad. A dramatic look at the lives of two men rebels in the 80s, whose relationship is deemed to be a taboo not only by the society but also in the group they belong in.  It looks at a moment in the Philippines culture where a gay relationship is something you would rather not talk about and sometimes accept it in silence. With Lamangan's sensitive direction, every character was shown with humanity that you can't help but be engaged on the things they're going through. He crafted the movie to give its audience a compelling, intense and thought-provoking experience. Jake Cuenca is passionately raw and admirable, it's

Chikkaness Cinephile's Guide: National Film Festival 2013 Entry "TINIK"

Romy Suzara is back with a masterpiece as he brings to the Filipinos his latest film, TINIK. "The film presents a sober and impartial study of homesexuality through the story of a middle-aged gay couturier and his attempts to hold on to his dignity amidst the dilemmas and problems of his being gay." The cast includes Lemuel Pelayo, Alexis Navarro, Bembol Roco, Lance Raymundo, Angeli Bayani, and Ricardo Cepeda.  Chikkaness' Impressions:  From the trailer, the film seems to be rich with philosophy, style, and heart. "Hindi ako marunong manggamit, pagmamahal ang alam ko," this line is enough for me to go and watch this movie. TINIK is one of the entry's in this year's Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013 All-Masters Edition that will run from September 11 - 17 at all SM Cinema Branches Nationwide. Chikkaness Cinephile's Guide: National Film Festival 2013 Entry "BAHAY NG LAGIM"

The Filipino cinephiles will celebrate as finally we will be able to witness the last movie made by great director Celso Ad Castillo, Bahay Ng Lagim. The broad plot follows the story of Sister Sofia, a renowned mystic healer whose life changed when she met again the disturbed and haunted Fatima.    The cast includes Bing Loyzaga, Lovely Rivero, Victoria Haynes, Ronnie Lazaro, Jacklyn Jose and Karel Marquez. Chikkaness' Impressions:  The cinematography and art direction seem to be remarkable. I'm seeing so much awesomeness here for the horror junkie like me. The trailer moved me to re-examine the things that gave me nightmares in the past. That's how masterful the material is. Chikkaness Cinephile's Guide: National Film Festival 2013 Entry "LIHIS"

Award-winning director Joel Lamangan comes with another epic movie that will highlight love in its purest form. The storyline is about two young male NPA warriors who fell in love with each other amidst their fight against despotism and dictatorship during the 70's. Written by Ricky Lee, the main cast includes Jake Cuenca, Lovi Poe, Isabelle Daza, Joem Bascon, and Ms Gloria Diaz.  Chikkaness' Impressions:  This could be one love story that cinephiles will surely talk about after watching the movie. I disagree that this is somewhat a copycat of Brokeback Mountain because it has a different theme and struggles on love. Direk Joel Lamangan continues to astonish us in his works. He dared to tell a story that some people would rather ignore because of prejudices. Its trailer shows off scenes with strong emotional punch. LIHIS is one of the entries in this year's Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013 All-Masters Edition that will run from September 11 - 17

Chikkaness Cinephile's Guide: National Film Festival 2013 Entry "BAMBOO FLOWERS"

Award-winning master director Maryo J delos Reyes comes with another masterpiece that will surely linger in the minds of the cinephiles via BAMBOO FLOWERS. The movie tackles on the issues being faced by the youth today like bullying, child labor; and how they face life with much hope and aspiration. Written by Aloy Adlawan, the cast includes Mylene Dizon, Max Collins, Yogo Singh, Orlando Sol, Ruru Madrid, Miggs Cuaderno, Spanky Manikan, Diva Montelaba, Barbara Miguel and Cinemalaya Best Actress Irma Adlawan. Chikkaness' Impressions:  From its trailer, the movie will be a landmark youth-centered movie that might enjoy the same recognition that delos Reyes' Magnifico has received. It's evident that the film is made with delirious compassion. I'm also seeing authentic performances from Max Collins, Mylene Dizon, Ruru Madrid and Ms Irma Adlawan. BAMBOO FLOWERS is one of the entries in this year's Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013 All-Masters

Chikkaness Cinephile's Guide: National Film Festival 2013 Entry "ANG TAG-ARAW NI TWINKLE"

Master director Gil Portes tackles domestic conflict in a different context in his latest movie entitled ANG TAG-ARAW NI TWINKLE. It follows the story of Twinkle (Ellen Adarna) who suffered from drug addiction and was one day introduced to a man who claimed to be his real father. His "real father," a former columnist rebel Ruben (Arnold Reyes) is then reunited in a different battlefield with a retired army general Cenon (Cris Villanueva) as they fight for their paternity rights on Twinkle. Ruben, however, is suffering from cancer and is about to die. The film also stars Rina Reyes, Dominic Roco, Mark Acueza, Yani Yuzon, Lester Llansang, and Pinky Amador. Chikkaness' Impressions: The plot rouses my interest as this is something new to me and of course the acting face off between Cris and Arnold as they tackle a role that requires them to age twice their age today. I'm fascinated to know as well how two men of totally opposite principles unite for their dau

Chikkaness Cinephile's Guide: National Film Festival 2013 Entry "OTSO"

Veteran filmmaker Elwood Perez has just completed his "fully realized art film" via OTSO. The film is about a Filipino screenwriter Lex based in Los Angeles who returned to Manila to write a script about the secret lives of his neighbors. The film does not consist of bankable stars but of caliber actors like Jun Urbano, Vangie Labalan and Ms Anita Linda and theater actor Vince Tañada as the lead. Chikkaness' Impressions: The film appears to be a complex beautifully realized portrait of interconnected lives. It is somewhat surreal and an intriguing story that I will surely check on during the Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013. OTSO is one of the entries in this year's Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013 All-Masters Edition that will run from September 11 - 17 at all SM Cinema Branches Nationwide. Chikkaness Cinephile's Guide: National Film Festival 2013 Entry "ANO ANG KULAY NG MGA NAKALIMUTANG PANGARAP?"

Ace director Jose Javier Reyes' ANO ANG KULAY NG MGA NAKALIMUTANG PANGARAP tells the story of Teresa, who dedicated 60 years of her life to a middle class family at the expense of her own happiness and contentment. When the matriarch of the family has died, the children are left with a decision on their nanny's fate.     The cast includes Alwynn Uytingco, Bobby Andrews, Chynna Ortaleza, Jackie Lou Blanco, Kim Rodriguez, Ruby Ruiz, Ryan Agoncillo, and Bb Rustica Carpio.  Chikkaness' Impressions: I liked how the photography set the mood of the film. Bb Carpio appears to personalize her character with the required compassion. Reyes did a nice job in making the film interesting to watch with the passion and emotion of the story present in its trailer. ANO ANG KULAY NG MGA NAKALIMUTANG PANGARAP is one of the entries in this year's Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013 All-Masters Edition that will run from September 11 - 17 at all SM Cinema Branches N

Chikkaness Cinephile's Guide: National Film Festival 2013 Entry "LAURIANA"

Mel Chinoglo's LAURIANA tackles domestic drama set in the 1950s about a Philippine Constabulary soldier’s mistress. The movie will explore on the elements of love, obsession and abuse. This psychological drama thriller stars Allen Dizon, Victor Basa, Chanel Latorre, Adrian Cabido, Jaycee Parker, Angeli Bayani, Rich Asuncion, Anna Luna, and Bangs Garcia. Chikkaness' Impressions: Its antiquated mood and ambiance makes its elements bizarre. This could be Bangs Garcia and Allen Dizon most challenging and praise-worthy work to date that their portrayals seemed to adds more realism to the movie. I think what cinephiles will like about this is on how we will be transported to the characters' world seamlessly and fully engaged. LAURIANA is one of the entries in this year's Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013 All-Masters Edition that will run from September 11 - 17 at all SM Cinema Branches Nationwide.  The movie is graded A by the Cinema Evaluation

Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin (ABS-CBN) - A Gripping Drama of Conflicting Principles and Values (TV Review)

Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin is gripping drama of conflicting principles and values. I'm one of the lucky viewers to witness the premiere week of this new primetime TV series of ABS-CBN and Dreamscape last week. The series is a satisfactory TV drama that does not only focus on one specific genre but offers a mixture of mystery, sexy & a bit of courtroom drama. It has a very interesting structure, not a simple flashback narrative or a straightforward story, but something creative altogether. It follows the story of Zenaida (Dawn Zulueta) whose husband, Martin (Gabby Concepcion) was killed inside the prison days after he being convicted for murder of a senator he was serving. Their son Miguel (Gerald Anderson) grew up not allowing anyone to harm him and his mother; thus involving him on fights that almost expel him in his school. The only person who could appease him is his childhood sweetheart Amanda (Cristine Reyes) whom his step brother Marcus (Rayver Cruz) is attr
